How to organize digital parking space management

March 10, 2021

In order to organize a digital parking system architecture, it is therefore essential to address individual challenges and opportunities.

Inventory

The first and most important step in setting up a digital parking system architecture is to take stock of the current situation and create a concept based on this. The first step is to analyze the current situation:

  • How has the parking space been managed so far?
  • What concepts are there for parking permits?
  • How are tariffs, bonus programs, parking times and signage organized?
  • What are the current costs of parking space management?

Subsequently, all problem points that are apparent from the current situation are recorded. Particular attention is paid to the flow of daily processes of organization and implementation that are caused by the current parking situation or are directed by it. Some problems are clearly recognizable, such as backlogs at barrier systems at peak times. However, there are usually also invisible problems that need to be identified. For example, are there employees who are unable to use a flexitime system offered by their employer as desired because the traffic and parking situation does not allow it?

Concept

Following the inventory, a tailor-made mobility concept with specific solutions is developed.digital infrastructures can be expanded and optimized as required. For this reason, it makes sense to compare several solution models. Which measures serve to solve the problem directly? Which measures provide additional benefits?

Installation

The next step is to set up the customized technology and put it into operation. For example, camera systems for license plate recognition and digital parking machines are physically installed. In addition, the corresponding software for drivers (e.g. parking app or digital user interfaces for booking long-term parking spaces) is set up and interfaces are organized.

Operation

Recording and evaluating parking structures and behaviour patterns enables continuous optimization and further development of the technology for sustainable operation. The digitalization of analogue processes leads to cost efficiency and time savings. For example, the administrative workload is significantly lower compared to analog parking management thanks to automated and digital processes.
